Types of Folding Squat Rack for your Home Gym

When it comes to setting up a home gym, a squat rack is an essential piece of equipment. It allows you to perform squats, bench presses, and other exercises with a barbell helping to optimise your strength training. But if you're short on space, a folding squat rack may be the best option for you allowing for a multi functional space to train. In this article, we'll take a look at the different types of folding squat racks available for home gyms and which one may be the best fit for you.

Wall Mounted Folding Squat Rack

These squat racks are designed to be mounted to the wall, which makes them a great option for those with limited floor space. They can be folded up against the wall when not in use, making them a great space-saving option. However, they do require a bit more installation and may not be as sturdy as other options. They are also limited to the weight capacity and may not hold as much as free-standing or power racks. These are the most space efficient option however it is not generally recommended to mount these folding racks onto plasterboard (drywall) as they cannot withstand the weight. These racks are often mounted onto stringer (horizontal wooden) boards during installation.

Many companies provide options for these folding racks to come with integrated cable pulley systems allowing for a larger range of exercises such as Lat pulldowns and Tricep extensions, not included in a wall mounted rack. They are a good option if you want to save space and you're looking for a rack that can withstand heavier weights without a complicated installation process.

Quarter / Half Squat Rack

A quarter squat rack and a half rack are not technically folding racks however they are more compact versions of a squat racks which can save you precious space in your garage gym. These racks take up less space than traditional squat racks and are usually much cheaper. They still allow you to perform squats and bench press and often come with spotter arms for additional safety. Although not quite a space efficient and the first two options these are still a great value option for a small home gym.
